Although her developing romance with Adam seems like more of a insta-attraction if anything they only knew each other for 24 hours, and within that timeframe, they planned to commit to each other and fall in love, which makes me rather dubious. She’s trying her best to survive in this cruel world, and this gruff demeanor is what I liked about her. Most time-travel books take place in the past, so having one in the future is a nice change of pace.Įlena is tough and no-nonsense she stands up for the weak with a scary amount of power. Regardless, it was entertaining to read Future Shock. The plot was a tad bit predictable halfway through I was already calling out what would happen and my guesses would be right. Even though their backstories were mentioned, they didn’t feel fully fleshed out to me. I wished the secondary characters played more of a role in the story. Our main character Elena was Latina, Trent was from El Salvador, and Zoe was Asian and bisexual, so I thought the representation was cool. What I particularly liked was the diversity of the cast of characters. I read through Future Shock in a day it was a very engrossing YA thriller. With a limited time to solve the mystery of their deaths, all five teens must somehow figure out how to work together without suspecting one another, and without getting caught. When they return to the present, it seems that four of them will die an unpleasant death, while the remaining one lives out his or her life in luxury. The only problem is when they step in through the time machine, it’s not 10 years forward they went, but 30 years. Aether’s mission? To send them 10 years into the future through a time machine they created and report back to them in 24 hours. Elena especially feels a connection to Adam, and this connection strengthens as they face the future together. She meets Adam, Chris, Trent, and Zoe, who’ve all had their fair share of problems. In return for her freedom, she must work with the mysterious Aether Corporation on a project designed for special teens like her. Future Shock is literally a race against time.Įlizabeth Briggs’s Future Shock features a group of five teenagers with secrets with only twenty-four hours to save themselves from a seemingly imminent demise. Elena Martinez has a special eidetic memory that grants her a ride out of the foster home system she’s been in almost all her life.
